Art and the shackles of addiction: Maddox

Over the years, Kenya has experienced a notable normalization of alcohol and drug consumption, not just within its creative community but across society as a whole. This societal shift is particularly evident within Kenya’s vibrant creative sectors. Musicians, artists, writers, and filmmakers often find themselves navigating a landscape where indulgence in alcohol and drugs is not just commonplace but sometimes celebrated as part of the artistic process. Many have attributed this shift to the increased marketing and content creators’ promotions of different alcoholic beverages without emphasis on the effects of overindulgence.

Gengetone artist Exray has shared that the predicament of alcoholism and drug addiction befell his bandmate, Maddox. This is after his fans recently spotted him looking unkempt and intoxicated. According to Exray, the pressure that comes with handling Fame and money was a bit too overwhelming to Maddox. He then started failing to show up for shows after going on benders.

Speaking during an interview with Oga Obinna, Exray noted that they used to do up to five shows a day. This translated to handling a huge amount of money without a manager nor financial advisors which saw Maddox channeling the money to drugs.
” Maddox alipata pesa akashindwa kuhandle, tulikua tuna perform 5shows a day, Kuna time Ata hakuwa Anakuja show. Tunampigia Simu anasema ako Diani”.
A handful of artists have also come out to speak about their struggles with the demons of alcoholism. Recently, comedian Chebet Rono came out to speak about her struggles with alcoholism. The talented Rono who is now on a sober curious journey says her time with the glass left her hospitalized with complications that were too difficult to comprehend.
Last year, Kenyan famous actor Omosh Kizangila came out seeking help. This is after fighting the demons of alcohol addiction. According to Omosh, the lack of financial advisers in his prime was part of the contributing factors that saw him direct his money to the bar.
